CHAPTER TEN

After an inordinate amount of time trying to look effortlessly stylish and eligible, I walked down to Campers and bought a cappuccino to wait for Jet. I hadn’t seen Angelo all week but I wasn’t surprised. Now I knew he was a shifter, any conversation we were likely to have would be difficult at best. Whoever he was, he didn’t have the guts to just walk up to me and ask me out even though he had supposedly ‘chosen’ me. I just hoped he hadn’t followed Jonah home to do something terrible to him.

As it turned out, I didn’t have to worry. I saw Jonah that morning as he came in for a takeaway latte. He gave me a little wave but we didn’t speak. I was monumentally relieved, but saddened. If this shifter guy was possessive enough to scare away potential friends, I didn’t want anything to do with him.

As I waited, I almost convinced myself Jet wouldn’t show up. Someone would come in with a broken car and he would forget about our date. I told myself to get a grip as I waited.

At five past eleven, he walked in.

He nodded at me, then went to the counter. I joined him.

“I’m buying you coffee, remember?”

“Oh. Uh, thanks. I’ll have an espresso.”

Damn, I’d hoped he’d want a latte, something that would last longer than a couple of gulps, anyway. Maybe that was his get-out clause.

“Where’s your dog?” He asked as I brought the tray over.

“He wasn’t mine. He just appeared a couple of weeks back. He’s disappeared again but I’m not sorry, to be honest. He was a pain in the ass.” I tried to keep the tremor from my voice. Angelo was the last thing I wanted to talk about. “How was the family party?”

“Yeah, good. Grace loved the quilt. Never seen her cry before. She’s got it in her special room. We’re not allowed in there but it’s cool. It’s good she’s got a place for nice things.”

I hid my smile. “Aw, I knew she’d love it.”

“Uh huh.” Jet nodded seriously. “How’s business?”

“Good. Better than I expected. Yours?”

He shrugged. “People will always need their cars and bikes fixed. The place has been in my family for years. We’ve been in the town a long time.”

“So they would have known my …” I paused. Did I really want to talk about my mom and dad? It would inevitably lead to telling Jet about their deaths. A bummer of a subject for a first date.

“Yeah, I know.” For the first time, Jet looked at me with some sympathy. “Is that why you went up to Black Bear Creek?”

“I guess.” I really didn’t want to talk about it.

“And you walked all the way home?”

“I don’t remember a lot about that. All I know is, my truck broke down so I must have walked.”

“Your truck was fine. There was nothing wrong with it.”

“Oh. Why didn’t it start then?”

Two endearing little dimples appeared either side of his shapely lips. “I must have missed something.
